Why you need to get in more broccoli In a pub quiz about food, broccoli would almost certainly be the answer. Why? Because it’s one of nature’s real superfoods. You’ll often find me extolling the virtues of these little trees in relation to women’s health, where it is an excellent detoxifier of oestrogen. When it comes to boosting immunity, broccoli has good levels of antioxidants sulforaphane, lutein and zeaxanthin, which fight disease. It’s also packed with vitamin C, which is undoubtedly an important nutrient for immune function as well as all the vitamin K you’ll need in a day, and decent amounts of folate, vitamin A, potassium, phosphorous and selenium Here’s one of my favourite recipes using broccoli. And finally, another favourite - the humble Selenium - building block of antioxidants! Selenium is an important trace mineral that is key in the production of glutathione (it also happens to be great for thyroid function so if yours is a little off, consider getting more of this antioxidant a double win). It's common to overindulge over the festive, so lets not kid ourselves that this sometimes comes with a little unwanted hangover too! So how can we mitigate the impact of alcohol on our bodies? Turns out there are a few simple things you can do.... read on!⠀ ⠀ The effect alcohol has on your body is dose dependent - your body can only process so much per hour - hence the more you drink the worse the hangover - as there isn't enough time for the liver to metabolize the alcohol (ethanol) into acetaldehyde which is then converted to carbon dioxide and water for excretion. ⠀ ⠀ Eat before you drink! The old adage of lining your stomach is true so a light meal will do the trick. Get plenty of sleep before a party or before Christmas Day festivities if possible. ⠀ ⠀ Take 500mg NAC and 1g Vitamin C pre-drinking. (NAC is the precursor to Glutathione which is an antioxidant and responsible for metabolizing the booze).⠀ ⠀ Then before bed, hydrate with 2-3 glasses of water, some more Vitamin C (another great antioxidant) at least 500mg. To help sleep (which is often disrupted due to alcohol) consider Magnesium Glycinate (200mg).⠀ ⠀ The next day electrolyte powders or coconut water are excellent followed a protein containing breakfast to combat the low blood sugar levels (yes that's why you crave carbs the morning after). Coupled with something like a banana to replace lost potassium and B6. Eggs are a great protein source and also contain NAC that wonderful antioxidant which will help rid the body of the toxins from alcohol.⠀ ⠀ Merry Christmas!⠀ ⠀ #hangovercure #vitaminC #selfcare #christmas2022 #wellbeing #alcohol

One of the simplest ways to protect yourself is to ensure you have a serum Vitamin D level between 50-80ng/ml. ⠀ How do you know?⠀ There are several companies on the market offering easy finger-prick testing at home.
